AI Thread Summary
Browser issues with starting new threads on Physics Forums are primarily linked to compatibility problems with Safari, particularly version 11.0.1, which fails to load the thread creation page. Users have reported that Firefox works without issues, while Safari displays a blank screen without error messages. Clearing cache and cookies has not resolved the problem for some users, and missing avatars have also been noted in Safari. Restarting the computer has been suggested as a potential fix, with some users finding it effective in resolving various browser-related issues. Overall, the discussion highlights ongoing compatibility challenges between Safari and the forum's functionality.

While it might seem paradoxical that I start a thread to complain that I can't start threads, this is appears to be a browser problem. I have to use Firefox to post, as it no longer works in Safari, Version 11.0.1 (11604.3.5.1.1). For instance, the link https://www.physicsforums.com/forums/feedback-and-announcements.19/create-thread never finishes loading and the window stays blank (no error message). The problem appears to span all subforums (although I have not checked them all :-p)

I've cleared the cache and cookies, but it hasn't solved the problem.

Edit: Some avatars are also missing in Safari.

Edit: This post was a new thread with Safari (11.0.3). I merged it with this thread now.

I can't reproduce your problem. Did you clear the cache? Are the two browsers on the same system?
Desktop vs. mobile version?

I have had several problems in the use of computers after they had been on for several hours; I do not recall all the problems; but I too found that a restart of the computer cleared away the problems.

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
This came up in my job today (UXP). Never thought to raise it here on PF till now. Hyperlinks really should be underlined at all times. PF only underlines them when they are rolled over. Colour alone (especially dark blue/purple) makes it difficult to spot a hyperlink in a large block of text (or even a small one). Not everyone can see perfectly. Even if they don't suffer from colour deficiency, not everyone has the visual acuity to distinguish two very close shades of text. Hover actions...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
