SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the hypothetical implications of having 360-degree joints in the human body. Participants explore the feasibility of such joints, noting that while ball-and-socket joints allow for significant movement, the biological constraints of muscles, tendons, and ligaments would pose challenges. The conversation highlights the imaginative potential of enhanced joint mobility, suggesting that individuals could excel in activities requiring extreme flexibility, such as twisting sports. Ultimately, the dialogue emphasizes creativity in thinking about human anatomy and movement.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of human anatomy, specifically joint types and functions.
  • Knowledge of biomechanics related to muscle and joint movement.
  • Familiarity with the concept of flexibility and its limits in physical activities.
  • Awareness of sports that require extreme joint mobility, such as gymnastics or dance.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the mechanics of ball-and-socket joints and their role in human movement.
  • Explore the limits of human flexibility and the implications for athletic performance.
  • Investigate the role of tendons and ligaments in joint stability and movement.
  • Examine sports that utilize extreme flexibility, such as contortion or acrobatics.
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for sports scientists, physical therapists, and athletes interested in understanding the limits and potential of human movement and flexibility.

Hi, I have a question. I know this is way too impossible, but just curious, what could a person do with 360 degree joints (all joints)?

Biology news on Phys.org
It couldn't perfectly be 360 degrees, or the join would have to be infinitesimally small. Those size joints do not normally occur in nature. Of course, if you mean ball-and-socket joints... well if every joint was the joint between your leg and your pelvis I guess. What about the muscles? The tendons and ligaments would have to stretch pretty far without tearing! Pulling a muscle? I know sometimes I wake up early, and my mind is more awake then my body. I perform a very quick neck movement, and my trapezius muscles fell preeety bad...

Your reply was pointless. He already stated that it was impossible and all you are doing is telling restrictions. His question was just to get the brain pumping and creative new ideas circulating around.

Now, with joints like those I would probably become a world champoin twister player!

I don't know, all you have to do is imagine all your joints are leg and pelvis joints.
