Does anyone actually know what this is made out of if indeed it is made out of something? Are there any theories?

flux is just a way of mathematically describing the strength of a field through an area (or volume, or whatever)

Unless, by chance, the question might refer to welding flux. That's a chemical used to purge impurities from a bead and promote the flow of metal.
