What type of pressure is used in industry? Static or dynamic?

SUMMARY

In industrial settings, pressure readings can be categorized as static or total pressure. A pressure gauge reading of 5000 kPa on a pipe typically indicates total pressure, which encompasses both static and dynamic pressure components. Static pressure is generally measured directly from a gauge, while total pressure requires the gauge port to be aligned with the flow direction to accurately capture dynamic pressure. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for accurate pressure measurement in chemical plants and other industrial applications.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of static and dynamic pressure concepts
  • Familiarity with pressure gauge operation
  • Knowledge of flow dynamics in piping systems
  • Basic principles of fluid mechanics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the differences between static and dynamic pressure measurement techniques
  • Learn about the installation and orientation of pressure gauges in flow systems
  • Explore the principles of fluid dynamics relevant to pressure readings
  • Investigate the applications of total pressure measurements in chemical engineering
USEFUL FOR

Engineers, technicians, and professionals in the chemical and process industries who require a clear understanding of pressure measurement techniques and their implications in industrial applications.

For example, in chemical plants, if a pressure gauge is on a pipe and it reads 5000 kPa, is this a static or total (static + dynamic) pressure reading?

I am thinking it must be the total pressure. Would that mean that a pressure reading in this setting is both a measure of static pressure and of flow rate?

Generally, you read static pressure from a pressure gauge. To read total pressure, the port needs to be oriented in the direction of the flow.
