This conflict is vastly, vastly more complicated than "one side is shooting at the other", and you are fully aware of that. It is a conflict of territory, history, culture, and religion. The problem is that Hamas has gained a following among the general population, through various strategies. KILLING the general population seems to be of dubious effectivity in order to reduce that support, considering Hamas' whole rhethoric is about retaliation.
