Everyone post what your anthem is.

Mine (despite popular belief) is not 'a boy named sue'. It's either "We're not going to take it" by twisted sister or by "Suffer" by Bad Religion

As mentioned there, I'll take 'Zombie Woof'. :approve:

Probably "Help, I'm a rock" by the Mothers of Invention.

The child of Evo really liked this part of it:

It can't happen here
It can't happen here
I'm telling you, my dear
That it can't happen here
Because I been checkin' it out, baby
I checked it out a couple a times, hmmmmmmmm
And I'm telling you
It can't happen here
Oh darling, it's important that you believe me
(Bop bop bop bop)
That it can't happen here

I'll take "Brass in Pocket" by the Pretenders.

'cause I'm special.. so special..

James Taylor's Secret O' Life springs to mind...

The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time
Any fool can do it
There ain't nothing to it
Nobody knows how we got to
The top of the hill
But since we're on our way down
We might as well enjoy the ride

The secret of love is in opening up your heart
It's okay to feel afraid
But don't let that stand in your way
'Cause anyone knows that love is the only road
And since we're only here for a while
Might as well show some style
Give us a smile

Isn't it a lovely ride
Sliding down
Gliding down
Try not to try too hard
It's just a lovely ride

Now the thing about time is that time
Isn't really real
It's just your point of view
How does it feel for you
Einstein said he could never understand it all
Planets spinning through space
The smile upon your face
Welcome to the human race

Some kind of lovely ride
I'll be sliding down
I'll be gliding down
Try not to try too hard
It's just a lovely ride

Do we have to be honest? "Desperado" by The Eagles/Linda Ronstadt (that's as close to honest I'm willing to admit... )

Oh yea? I'm not really into hard stuff, but I like that song for some primal reason

I'm usually listening to some mellow vocal trance or happy hardcore song, with good female vocals that blend in with the synths and compliment the base in the song. If it also has a progressive/uplifting texture and good lyrics, its even better

That NIN CD is pretty mello. When you say trance songs, do you mean new age type music? I like Loreena McKennitt for example.

Here... come sit on Dr. Danger's lap and tell him all about it...

If anyone wonders why I consider this my song, here are the lyrics:

Zombie Woof by Frank Zappa

Three hunderd years ago
Thought I might get some sleep
Stretched myself out onna antique bed
An' my spirit did a midnight creep

You know I'll never sleep no more

To me it seem that is just ain't wise

Didja ever wake up in the mornin'
With a ZOMBY WOOF behind your eyes

I am the ZOMBY WOOF
I'm the creature all the ladies been
Talkin' about

I am the ZOMBY WOOF
They all seek for shelter when I come chargin' out
Here I'm is, the ZOMBY WOOF

Tellin' you all the Zomby troof
Here I'm is...

Reety-awrighty, he da ZOMBY WOOF
Reety-awrighty, he da ZOMBY WOOF

The said aw-reety
An' they was aw-righty
An' I was a Zomby for you, little lady...

I got a great big pointed fang
Which is my Zomby Toof
My right foot is bigger than my other one is
Like a reg'lar Zomby Hoof
If I raid your dormitorium
Don't try to remain aloof...

I might snatch you up screamin' through the window all nekkid
An' do it to you on the roof, don't mess with the
ZOMBY WOOF

I am about as evil as a Boogie Man can be!

Tellin' you all the Zomby Troof
Here I'm is, the ZOMBY WOOF

Tellin' you all the Zomby Troof
Here I'm is, the ZOMBY WOOF

NIN is more industrial/heavy metal. Trance is electronic dance music aka techno. So trance/techno would be Paul Van Dyk, Oakenfold - anyone heard starry-eyed surprise on that Coke commercial?

New Age is not under the trance category.

Doesn't that dance music get really tedious really quickly?
It's just a constant beat with some laser sounds thrown in and maybe a stolen sample from somewhere with some sci-fi quote in it ;)
"The system is down"

Anyways I'd have to go with "Life" by Devin Townsend.
I'm amazed at how many people who like metal or rock don't know about him 'cause I always thought he was really popular

  • #21
its hard to explain, but the right combination of beat, vocals, and certain synth creates a great song - doesn't matter if its techno or rock. oh and if you have a good subwoofer or headphones to hear all the details its even better

got your high, high hopes
but now you're high for the right source
fears collide and nights are dark
but now it's time to brighten up

don't ever let them bring you down

got your high, high hopes

wind is warm, stars are bright
just close your eyes and imagine all

don't ever let them bring you down

That has to be Øystein Sunde's "Kjekt å ha".
Right from the start, it's just brilliant:

"Helt i fra tidenes litt ut på dagen
da Adam og Eva ble jagd ut av hagen,
har sjølberging vært alfa og omega"

Hmm...I think the theme song from Tiny Toons Adventures might work for me:

my theme song is America the Beautiful... but wait... there's a catch... i sing it in French... but wait... there's more... Its fake french. heh. i always sit around singing that sound in fake french. hence, its my theme.

heh, a friend of mine last week said my theme ought be "seventeen" by winger. (its an 80's hair band song... but its fitting)

...
Such a bad girl
Loves to work me over time
Feels good (ha)
Dancin' close to the borderline
She's a magic mountain
She's a leather glove (oh)
She's my soul
It must be love

Chorus:
She's only seventeen (seventeen)
The girl she gives me love like I've never seen
She's only seventeen (seventeen)
Daddy says she's too young
But she's old enough for me
Seventeen!
She's everything I need (seventeen)
Daddy says she's too young
But she's old enough
Old enough for me
Yeah! Yeah!

I've never been able to decide between two songs. You can go Spinozan and say they are equally valid, but incommensurable, descriptions of my state of being:

Iggy Pop - Some Weird Sin

Well, I never got my license to live
They won't give it up
So I stand at the world's edge

I'm trying to break in
Oh, I know it's not for me
And the sight of it all
Makes me sad and ill
That's when I want- Some Weird Sin

Things get too straight
I can't bear it
I feel stuck, stuck on a pin

I'm trying to break in
Oh, I know it's not for me
But the sight of it all
Makes me sad and ill
That's when I want- Some Weird Sin
That's when I want- Some Weird Sin
Just to relax with

Yeah, some dumb, weird sin
For a while anyway
With my head on the ledge
That's what you get out on the edge
Some Weird Sin

Things get too straight
I can't bear it
I feel stuck, stuck on a pin

I'm trying to break in
Oh, I know it's not for me
When the sight of it all
Makes me sad and ill
That's when I want- Some Weird Sin
That's when I want- Some Weird Sin
Just to relax with

That's some dumb weird sin
For a while anyway
With my head out on the ledge
That's what you get out on the edge
Some Weird sin

and Two Can Have a Party by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell

Who needs the noise of a party crowd
Who needs the records turned up loud
When two, we two can have a party all alone?
Oh yeah

Ooo pretty music, a cozy chair
Lights down low and I'm holding you near
Oh baby, we two can have a party all alone
Oh yeah

When we are together, I'm like a feather
Floating in the air
I don't care where we're going
Just as long as you are there
Oh baby
Me and you, you and me
We can have a party, just wait and see
Oh well, two, we two can have a party all alone
Yes we can

Baby, two, we two can have a party all alone
Nobody else, you and me, hah, all alone
Pretty, pretty music, a cozy chair, yeah

Iron Maiden's "Paschendale", from their last effort "Dance of death"

"In a foreign field he lay
Lonely soldier, unknown grave
On his dying words he prays
Tell the world of Paschendale

Relive all that he's been through
Last communion of his soul
Rust your bullets with his tears
Let me tell you 'bout his years

Laying low in a blood filled trench
Kill tim 'til my very own death
On my face I can feel the falling rain
Never see my friends again

In the smoke, in the mud and lead
Smell the fear and the feeling of dread
Soon be time to go over the wall
Rapid fire and the end of us all

Whistles, shouts and more gun fire
Lifeless bodies hang on barbed wire
Battlefield nothing but a bloody tomb
Be reunited with my dead friends soon

Many soldiers eighteen years
Drown in mud, no more tears
Surely a war no-one can win
Killing time about to begin

Home, far away
From the war, a chance to live again
Home, far away
But the war, no chance to live again

The bodies of ours and our foes
The sea of death it overflows
In no man's land, God only knows
Into jaws of death we go

Crucified as if on a cross
Allied troops they mourn their loss
German war propaganda machine
Such before has never been seen

Swear I heard the angels cry
Pray to god no more may die
So that people know the truth
Tell the tale of Paschendale

Cruelty has a human heart
Every man does play his part
Terror of the men we kill
The human heart is hungry still

I stand my ground for the very last time
Gun is ready as I stand in line
Nervous wait for the whistle to blow
Rush of blood and over we go

Blood is falling like the rain
Its crimson cloak unveils again
The sound of guns can't hide their shame
And so we die on Paschendale

Dodging shrapnel and barbed wire
Running straight at the cannon fire
Running blind as I hold my breath
Say a prayer symphony of death

As we charge the enemy lines
A burst of fire and we go down
I choke a cry but no-one hears
Fell the blood go down my throat

Home, far away
From the war, a chance to live again
Home, far away
But the war, no chance to live again

See my spirit on the wind
Across the lines, beyond the hill
Friend and foe will meet again
Those who died at Paschendale"

There are songs that can be qualified as war anthems, a gret deal of ManOwar's songs fall in this category, but Paschendale can be categorized as an anti-war anthem. The dramatism of the lyrics as well as the athmospheric music make this song something special

Billy Joel "Piano Man"
It's nine o'clock on a Saturday
Regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sitting next to me
Makin' love to his tonic and gin
He says, Son, can you play me a melody
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete
When I wore a younger mans clothes
La la la, de de da
La la, de de da da dum
Chorus:
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright
Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke or he'll light up your smoke
But there's someplace that he'd rather be
He says, Bill, I believe this is killing me.
As the smile ran away from his face
Well I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place
Oh, la la la, de de da
La la, de de da da dum
Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he's talkin' with Davy, who's still in the navy
And probably will be for life
And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinkin' alone
Chorus
sing us a song you're the piano man
sing us a song tonight well we're all in the mood
for a melody and you got us feeling alright
It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause he knows that it's me they've been comin' to see
To forget about life for a while
And the piano, it sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say, Man, what are you doin' here?
Oh, la la la, de de da
La la, de de da da dum
Chorus:
sing us a song you're the piano man sing us a song tonight
well we're all in the mood for a melody and you got us
feeling alright

Ok, this would be my alternate theme song "and so it goes" by Billy Joel

In every heart there is a room
A sanctuary safe and strong
To heal the wounds from lovers past
Until a new one comes along.

I spoke to you in cautious tones,
You answered me with no pretense.
And still I feel I said too much,
My silence is my self-defense.

And every time I’ve held a rose
It seems I only felt the thorns.
And so it goes, and so it goes,
And so will you soon I suppose.

But if my silence made you leave,
Then that would be my worst mistake.
So I will share this room with you,
And you can have this heart to break.

And this is why my eyes are closed,
It’s just as well for all I’ve seen.
And so it goes, and so it goes,
And you’re the only one who knows.

So I would choose to be with you,
That's if the choice were mine to make.
But you can make decisions too,
And you can have this heart to break.

And so it goes, and so it goes,
And you’re the only one who knows.

I'm in the mood for Godsmack tonight. It seems most fitting since I'm sitting here in my office with only one other faculty member around who I've run into tonight. (Where are all the slaves...er...I mean grad students?)

The first song that came to mind was Serenity.
As I sit here and slowly close my eyes
I take another deep breath
And feel the wind pass through my body
I'm the one in your soul
Reflecting inner light
Protect the ones who hold you
Cradling your inner child

I need serenity
In a place where I can hide
I need serenity
Nothing changes, days go by

Where do we go when we just don't know
And how do we relight the flame when it's cold
Why do we dream when our thoughts mean nothing
And when will we learn to control

Tragic visions slowly stole my life
Tore away everything
Cheating me out of my time
I'm the one who loves you
No matter wrong or right
And every day I hold you
I hold you with my inner child

I need serenity
In a place where I can hide
I need serenity
Nothing changes, days go by

Where do we go when we just don't know
And how do we relight the flame when it's cold
Why do we dream when our thoughts mean nothing
And when will we learn to control

Where do we go when we just don't know
And how do we relight the flame when it's cold
Why do we dream when our thoughts mean nothing
And when will we learn to control

I need serenity [x2]

I find that song very soothing.
But, they also seem to have left the heat off in the building this weekend (brrrrrrrrrrr, we're getting snow flurries tonight and no heat on), and given the nature of research some days, Voodoo also came to mind as fitting.

I'm not the one who's so far away
When I feel the snake bite enter my veins
Never did I want to be here again
And I don't remember why I came

Candles raise my desire
Why I'm so far away
No more meaning to my life
No more reason to stay
Freezing feeling,
Breathe in, breathe in
I'm coming back again

[Chorus]

Hazing clouds rain on my head
Empty thoughts fill my ears
Find my shade by the moon light
Why my thoughts aren't so clear
Demons dreaming
Breathe in, breathe in
I'm coming back again

[Chorus x4]

Voodoo, voodoo, voodoo, voodoo.
[Repeat]

(Yes, Danger, my musical tastes really do include both Clint Black and Godsmack; Garth Brooks is good too if I'm really sulking over something).
