Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around sourcing piezo stacks for an experiment aimed at generating power from applied force on piezoelectric materials. Participants explore options for purchasing these components, including considerations for price and alternative sources.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant is seeking advice on where to find a reasonably priced piezo stack for an experiment involving energy generation from impact.
  • Another participant suggests searching for piezo film sheets and provides Google search links related to piezo film and energy harvesting.
  • A third participant mentions that Thorlabs sells piezo stacks, providing a specific product link and price, while also suggesting checking eBay for potentially lower prices.
  • A later reply recalls a company that previously marketed piezo film sheets, identifying it as Kynar Piezo Film, but notes uncertainty about its current business status.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on a single source for piezo stacks, and multiple suggestions and options are presented without clear agreement on the best approach.

Contextual Notes

Some suggestions depend on the availability of specific products and may be influenced by the current market situation. There is uncertainty regarding the status of certain companies mentioned.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in piezoelectric materials, energy harvesting experiments, or sourcing electronic components may find this discussion relevant.

Hi

I'm planning an experiment in which I will try to generate power from a force applied to some piezo electric material (in fact it will be an impact with the ground).

I think I need to find a piezo stack, but where can I buy such a thing for a reasonable price? Does anyone have any ideas? (I'm not adverse to taking something apart to get hold of the stack)

I've heard of piezo buzzers and loudspeakers, but do these use stacks?

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Ack, there's a company that used to make piezo film sheets in all kinds of sizes...their name escapes me at the moment. In the mean time...

I'll come back and post if I can remember the name of that company...

Hah! I remembered. Mind like a steel trap!

Kynar Piezo Film. Marketed by Pennwalt Corporation at some point. A quick web search doesn't turn up much, so they might not be in business anymore.
