Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on identifying top research opportunities for pursuing a PhD in quantum information, specifically focusing on areas such as quantum entanglement and quantum teleportation. Participants share insights about various institutions and research groups known for their contributions to quantum information science.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the best places to pursue a PhD in quantum information, specifically mentioning interests in quantum entanglement and teleportation.
  • Another participant suggests the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) at the University of Waterloo, highlighting its notable researchers and funding support.
  • A different participant reiterates the recommendation for IQC and adds that the University of Waterloo has launched a new quantum information program, while also mentioning MIT as a strong option.
  • Another suggestion includes the quantum optics, quantum nanophysics, and quantum information group at the University of Vienna, led by Anton Zeilinger.
  • One participant mentions the Centre for Quantum Technologies at the National University of Singapore as another potential option.
  • There is a discussion about the distinction between theoretical and experimental approaches, with a recommendation for Peter Zoller's group at the University of Innsbruck for theoretical interests.
  • Juan Ignacio Cirac's group at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching, Munich, is also proposed as a potential research opportunity.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants present multiple competing views regarding the best institutions for studying quantum information, with no consensus reached on a single best option.

Contextual Notes

Participants express varying levels of familiarity with specific programs and researchers, indicating that some recommendations may lack detailed knowledge or personal experience.

What is the best place to do a PhD in quantum information?

I want to do research on quantum entanglement and quantum teleportation.

Hey,

I'm totally biased, but you might want to check out the http://iqc.uwaterloo.ca/" . There are tonnes of big quantum info names there, like Ray Laflamme, Michelle Mosca, Frank Wilhelm, David Cory, Richard Cleve, etc. Not to mention the Canadian government and Mike Lazaridis are pumping money into IQC. The University of Waterloo (with which IQC is affiliated) just created a new quantum information program. I don't know much of the specifics, but it's probably a good start.

Obviously, MIT is another good place, but I think that goes without saying.

What about the quantum optics, quantum nanophysics and quantum information group of the University of Vienna? led by Anton Zeilinger.

Sadly, I personally cannot give you any more detail than that. I'm a member of IQC but my work isn't with information theory. Hopefully someone else is knowledgeable.

theory or experiment?

Anton Zeilinger is an experimentalist. If you are more interested in the theoretical aspect, you should check out Peter Zoller's group at the University of Innsbruck.

You might also be interested in joining Juan Ignacio Cirac's group at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching, Muenchen. Here's a link:
