Which strain tensor is used by Abaqus?

AI Thread Summary
Abaqus uses logarithmic strain in its UMAT for geometrical non-linear analysis. In geometrically linear analysis, all strain tensors equate to engineering strain, making the specific tensor used irrelevant. For non-linear analysis, the choice of strain tensor depends on whether the formulation is in reference or current configuration. The discussion highlights the lack of clarity in the Abaqus manual regarding strain tensor usage. Overall, understanding the strain tensor used is crucial for accurate modeling in UMAT.

Hi all,
I have some doubts regarding the strain tensors Abaqus uses for the case of Geometrical non linear analysis.

In the case of geometrically linear analysis, all the strain tensors will be equal to engineering strain, So it doesn't matter which strain tensor Abaqus uses.

But for non-linear analysis i have learned in theory that, if the formulations are done in reference configuration we use Green Lagrange / Karni Reiner strain tensors, and if the formulations are done in current frame, some other strain tensors are used.

But which type these formulations Abaqus uses and with which strain tensor it does the calculations ?

I am asking this question because, I am working with UMAT, and I am doing geometrical non linear analysis. In UMAT Abaqus uses the variable STRAN for strain. I would like to know which strain is it ?

Have you checked the Abaqus literature?

Hi,

Thank you for your reply @Chestermiller .

Yup, I have gone through Abaqus manual, but it wasn't mentioned clearly, regarding this topic.
But anyway, now i came to know that for the case of nonlinear analysis Abaqus uses logarthmic strain in its UMAT.

Thread 'I need a concave mirror with a focal length length of 150 feet'
I need to cut down a 3 year old dead tree from top down so tree causes no damage with small pieces falling. I need a mirror with a focal length of 150 ft. 12" diameter to 36" diameter will work good but I can't think of any easy way to build it. Nothing like this for sale on Ebay. I have a 30" Fresnel lens that I use to burn stumps it works great. Tree service wants $2000.
Hi all, i have some questions about the tesla turbine: is a tesla turbine more efficient than a steam engine or a stirling engine ? about the discs of the tesla turbine warping because of the high speed rotations; does running the engine on a lower speed solve that or will the discs warp anyway after time ? what is the difference in efficiency between the tesla turbine running at high speed and running it at a lower speed ( as fast as possible but low enough to not warp de discs) and: i...
