Who Discovered Quantisation of Charge?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on identifying the first person to propose that the electron has a quantised charge. While Millikan's experiment is acknowledged for demonstrating this concept, the inquiry seeks to clarify who influenced Millikan's understanding. It is noted that sustained work by J.J. Thomson and others suggested the idea of quantised charge prior to Millikan's findings. The conversation emphasizes the importance of historical context in scientific discoveries. Understanding these contributions is essential for a comprehensive laboratory report.

Friends,

I am trying to ascertain who first postulated that the electron had a charge that was quantised.

I know all about Millikan's experiment. It's fairly clear he knew what he was looking for but I want to know basically who told Millikan.

It's for a simple backround piece for a Laborotory Report

Cheers if ye can help.

Apologies,

It appears that sustained work by Thompson et al, suggested that charge may be quantised but that Millikan had demonstrated it indeed.

Cheers.

Thread 'Help with Time-Independent Perturbation Theory "Good" States Proof'
(Disclaimer: this is not a HW question. I am self-studying, and this felt like the type of question I've seen in this forum. If there is somewhere better for me to share this doubt, please let me know and I'll transfer it right away.) I am currently reviewing Chapter 7 of Introduction to QM by Griffiths. I have been stuck for an hour or so trying to understand the last paragraph of this proof (pls check the attached file). It claims that we can express Ψ_{γ}(0) as a linear combination of...
