Does anybody know why you hear the train wheel SCREECH when the train makes a curve?
The screeching noise produced by train wheels on curves is primarily due to the conical shape of the wheels, which allows for differential movement between the inner and outer wheels as the train navigates a curve. This design shifts the contact point on the outer wheel to a larger diameter while the inner wheel contacts a smaller diameter. Additionally, the noise can be exacerbated by factors such as incorrect geometry, poor maintenance, or excessive speed, leading to occasional contact of the flanges, which are not the primary mechanism for keeping the wheels on the rails.
PREREQUISITESRailway engineers, train maintenance personnel, and anyone interested in the mechanics of train operations and noise reduction strategies.
