Why is the Main Page Not Refreshing Properly?

AI Thread Summary
Users are experiencing issues with the main page not refreshing properly, displaying outdated content until manually refreshed. The problem seems linked to browser settings, particularly in Internet Explorer, where the frequency of page checks can be adjusted. If set to "Never," the browser only updates when refreshed, while "Automatically" may not refresh frequently enough for some users. Clearing the cache is recommended to improve performance and ensure the latest content is displayed. Overall, adjusting browser settings and clearing temporary files can help resolve these refreshing issues.

When I see the main page with the different subforums and their latest posts, I see the state it was in several days ago. If I click on refresh it shows me the current state. If I then go into a subformum and exit using back, the main page returns to the old state.

Are other users experiencing this? Is it a bug or a feature?

I've also experienced this.

Sounds like it has more to do with your browser than PF. Trying clearing your cache, close your browser and then try again. Are you using IE?

Using IE, shut it down over night, still get the same result. See it on both my home computer and this, my son's computer.

Under "Tools", select "Internet Options", then "Settings".

This shows how often your browser checks for newer pages. If its set to "Never", then it will only update when you select "Refresh". If its set to "Automatically", then I'm not sure how many visits or how much time before it refreshes itself.

The other two options are self-explanatory.

Some folks have very slow internet connections and most pages people reference are static. Once the page has been stored in a temporary internet file, the old data from your computer is referenced, speeding up your access time to the info. You only have to download pages you haven't referenced recently (how recently depends upon how much space on your hard drive you're willing to sacrifice to hold temporary internet files). About the only time non-refreshing pages become a problem is for forums such as this.

My settings are set to "automatically" and I have never had any problems, I believe you may have found the issue BobG.

My son's machine has this set to Automatically. I don't want to mess with his settings so I will just continue to hit refresh. It's almost a reflex now anyway...

Have you cleared the cache (all the temp files)?

Why not? It only takes a couple seconds to set it back. As long as he knows how to set it in case you forget, of course. You don't like to have to re-download all those gifs and so on that fill up the cool looking websites.

Its a really good idea to clear cache every time you closed (you'd be amazed how many tens of thousands of files can build up in a few months).

Tools->Internet Options->Advanced->Empty temporary internet files when browser is closed (toward the bottom)

Thanks. I'll do this on my machine when I get home. I prefer not to do any specs changes, however well justified, on my son's machine.
