SUMMARY

Wind speeds increase with elevation due to reduced friction with the ground. Hurricane hunter aircraft utilize a correction factor to account for these variations, although specific numerical values are not provided in the discussion. A typical statistical maximum wind speed curve indicates significant changes in wind speeds above 10 kilometers. At an elevation of approximately 300 feet, the increase in wind speed is marginal, estimated at less than 5%.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of atmospheric science principles
  • Familiarity with wind speed measurement techniques
  • Knowledge of the effects of elevation on meteorological phenomena
  • Basic comprehension of aviation meteorology
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the correction factors used by hurricane hunter aircraft
  • Study the statistical maximum wind speed curves in atmospheric science
  • Explore the impact of elevation on wind patterns using meteorological models
  • Learn about the relationship between friction and wind speed at various altitudes
USEFUL FOR

Meteorologists, aviation professionals, and anyone interested in understanding the dynamics of wind speeds at different elevations.

How does Wind speeds change as a function of elevation?

You mean other than by friction with with the ground?

higher is faster

I know hurricane hunter aircraft use a correction factor
but have no idea what the exact numbers are

Why the sudden change above 10km?

So I can expect there to be only a marginal increase (like <5%) in wind speeds at an elevation of around 300 ft?
