Are there rejected physics PhD theses?

In summary, historically, Pierre Maurice Marie Duhem is the only famous physicist who had his first thesis in physics rejected but his second thesis in mathematics accepted. Currently, it is rare for a thesis to be rejected as students are usually advised to continue working on it before submission. Theses are more commonly rejected at the proposal stage.

Historically, I can only think of http://www.encyclopedia.com/topic/Pierre_Maurice_Marie_Duhem.aspx#1, whose first thesis in physics was rejected, but his second thesis in mathematics was accepted.

But,
  1. Are there other famous physicists who wrote a PhD thesis that was subsequently rejected?
    &
  2. Are physics PhD theses rejected today? If so, what % of them are?
thanks

Today if a thesis is not going to pass, its not submitted and the student is told to keep working on it. Sometimes the student gives up, but it is rare-to-nonexistent that a thesis is rejected.

Usually theses are rejected at the proposal stage. So it often happens that a proposed topic is rejected, but almost never after someone has bothered to write a complete thesis on the subject.
