Why is copper tubing used to make high q antennas?
My question is just what the title says. Why is copper tubing used instead of normal wire or enameled wire to make antennas and coils at high frequencies? Does it offer less resistance than normal wire?- baconman71

Manned Mission to Mars: Ideal Locations for Exploration
What locations on Mars would be good for a first manned mission? This is remembering that we want to 1. survive out there and 2. be able to look for possible signs of life and do other science (study geology and the atmosphere).- baconman71

How does the inductor differ from the antenna?
Ok thank you very much. I thought it was interesting that they used hollow tubing. I had never heard of that before. But I do agree with you and I will make my experiment on a small scale. Something else that I have been struggling with is the oscillator part. The video helped clear up quite a...- baconman71

How does the inductor differ from the antenna?
I just watched it and took notes on it. There is quite a bit of detail in the video which is fantastic. I have actually successfully made a set up of this process. It worked well as a primary attempt. But something that I have been trying to figure out is something with the kind of wire used at...- baconman71

How does the inductor differ from the antenna?
Ok that makes sense. But then what are the most important factors in near field coupling? And what do you mean by matching? (impedance matching or matching of the actual coils) I want to test different coil shapes and different Q's in my experiment to see how everything works out but I just want...- baconman71

How does the inductor differ from the antenna?
I've been trying to figure out how an inductor is different from an antenna. It's obvious that the inductor has more inductance than an antenna would, but let me try to explain it from my point of view. My current research project for school (lasting this year and into my senior year) is on the...- baconman71

Understanding the Mechanics of a Cockcroft-Walton Generator
I found this generator online and I was wondering how this setup works. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockcroft%E2%80%93Walton_generator How do the different stages up the voltage into dc? and just how do the capacitors and diodes actually work together to do this?- baconman71

How do fluorescent tubes light up with radio waves?
How strong does the peak field strength have to be in order for this to occur?- baconman71

How do fluorescent tubes light up with radio waves?
I was reading somewhere that radio waves can actually light up gasses in these tubes. How does this work?- baconman71

Series or Parallel connection for LC circuit
That's interesting. So that means that the connections need to be in parallel for both the sending and receiving circuits?- baconman71

Series or Parallel connection for LC circuit
Ok good. I am actually in this stage right now and I do thankfully have an oscilloscope or else this would be infinitely harder. What would be the step after this?- baconman71

Series or Parallel connection for LC circuit
Ok let me describe it to you. I want to mimic the idea that MIT used on a project they did several years ago that has now turned into witricity. First there is the source of the frequency. I have been told that the "higher" the better and I have been told to try making an oscillator of sorts...- baconman71

Series or Parallel connection for LC circuit
I am planning to probably attempt to try to power several different items beginning with an LED or maybe just using a multimeter to see how much power is actually transferred. And sophiecentaur what do you mean by match output impedance of the source? I'm just confused on that.- baconman71

Series or Parallel connection for LC circuit
Ok, so from what I understand it would be better to put the two connections (on the sending and receiving coil) in series to allow for maximum power to be transmitted?- baconman71
