I am looking for a calculus book that gives the reader deep understanding of how calculus works, not just rote memorization. I have heard that the books by Micahel Spivak and Tom Apostol are good. Which of the books provides the best understanding of calculus: Spivak's or Apostol's? My parents...
Do I need to know calculus? Or do I need to know differential equations? Do both of the theories even use the same mathematics? I really want to know more about relativity, and learning about the math behind it would be helpful.
1. Why do anions, such as the chloride anion, increase in size when they achieve a full valence electron shell? This does not make sense to me because there is no new shell that is added.
2. How would you name ionic compunds involving polyatomic ions? My book says that (NH4)2CO3 would be...
I've been searching online for one of the US News reviews, but I have found nothing as of yet. Would anyone here know what are the top ten undergraduate schools in physics and know the rankings?
How would I write the configuration for ions? Would I alter the last subshell (e.g. 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10: I change 3d10) or the shell with the n and l (1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10: I change 4s2)? Thanks.
I know it doesn't offer a well-rounded education (after all, its an institute of technology), but how does its science education rank. I am hoping to have a science career, so I'm interested in IIT, but I need to know its quality of education.
are the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) some of the best science schools in the world? My parents want me to prepare for the entrance exam to get in, stating that it is better than Harvard, MIT, Duke, or other Ivy League schools. I really didn't take them seriously until I found...
Too much physics!
I was reading the physics courses http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/web/courses/courses/index.htm#Physics", and boy, I was shocked. If I were to get a PhD in physics, would I have to take that many courses?
Seriously, I agree with Doc Al. You should rent the movie and see it for yourself. Here's the difference between Cosmos and What the Bleep! - Cosmos uses valid science, even though it is simplified for children. What the Bleep Do We Know! makes conclusions unsupported by evidence based on skewed...
The thing is that I saw a lot of positive reviews of it on Amazon, so I am now really uncertain. How about a book I found through PF - General Chemistry: Principles and Modern Applications by Ralph H. Petrucci, William S. Harwood, and Geoffrey Herring?
Yes, but when uneducated laypeople present a distorted version of it as a fact, then we should not trust them. You also must understand that many aspects of QM are too difficult to understand for people without sufficient mathematical education, so when it is presented, it should be done by...
I was in Barnes and Noble and few weeks ago searching through the science section, and I found a small book by Linus Pauling called General Chemistry. Alhtough it does not look like a normal textbook, it is supposed to contain all of the information that an undergrad needs to understand...
