Admissions About declining admission of offers

Does anyone know how to decline an offer of admission that you already accepted...? Especially if it is one from a top school and you were given early admission offer...? Thank you for reading

Other Should I Become a Mathematician?

Even if it is a language class? How does the committee even view stat classes? Especially when my school is lacking pure math classes?

Other Should I Become a Mathematician?

Hey mathwonk, does it look bad if you take an art class for your final year even though you have maxed out all the art credits you need? Going into pure math, but only a stats class is available for the taking and I am not particularly interested in statistics. Do you also think it is necessary...

Not allowed to take a graduate class

I can't enroll because the system wouldn't allow me. Sitting in the class without being a real student is not an option since it could lead to "academic misconduct" for sitting through a class that you didn't pay for.

Not allowed to take a graduate class

It is a possibility, though he seemed pretty happy in a previous email when I asked him. He cc'd the email (the one where he tells me it is only for grd students) to the department head. Maybe he hopes I talk to him instead No, my college has a very small history and small department. I am...

Whiteboards are great. You start to write and "create" things you would never do with pencil and paper. I have experienced the amount of creativity output with it.

Not allowed to take a graduate class

I am an undergraduate math student. This fall, I wanted to enroll into a grad class. I have all the necessary math background to enroll (according to instructor). But last night, I got an email from him saying "He [I] was told that only graduate students can register" This ruined my day...

    Stochastic Process prerequsites and difficulty?

My university is offering a course called "Stochastic Process". The only prerequisites to this course according to my university is a course in Probability which uses the book by Rosen. I've read elsewhere that the course actually requires more of analysis (functional analysis and measure...

Schools Question about grad school; advisor; letter

Feels like I have been dodging this question for a long time. I want to do research under him because he is one of the few profs who is in geometry in where I live. Also I got an email saying he does still do research. However he also sent me some papers he wrote (and coauthoered) 6 years...

Other Should I Become a Mathematician?

Wouldn't they find it stupid that you are listing a first year calculus book in a graduate personal statement?

Schools Question about grad school; advisor; letter

I am using my "directed study" courses for research. I cannot use it for reading courses. We are limited to a certain number of directed studies. On an other matter, would it be rude to list out the professors you want to work with? Or should I just boil it down to one?

Other Should I Become a Mathematician?

Hey mathwonk, would a grad admission officer laugh at me if I write I want to study differential geometry because of Spivak in my personal statement? And possibly mentioning going through his first year calculus book? Or would it be better to not write the latter at all? Depending on the pace, I...

Schools Question about grad school; advisor; letter

The thing is that my math department is very small, so even if I don't want to take senior classes, I have to. On the other hand, even if I want to take more rigorous courses like topology, algebra, etc, I cannot because of either conflicts or they just aren't offered. Should I mention this? Or...

Schools Question about grad school; advisor; letter

Advisor I am applying to graduate school and there is a professor I want to work with. According to the university, he is an active faculty. I checked his profile and all I could find was his name, the university's address and his research which tersely states: "geometry". So I looked him...

Other Should I Become a Mathematician?

Random question here. When applying for grad school, in your personal statement, is it silly to include your math background? Should I assume the reader already knows my background (the transcripts)? I've TAed before, but I am not sure how to throw that into my PS. Also I recently did some...
