Graduate Locally Euclidean and Topological Manifolds
Hello, I am learning about manifolds but I am not understanding part of the definition. This is what I'm looking at for defining the n-manifold M. (i) M is Hausdorff (ii) M is locally Euclidean of dimension n, and (iii) M has a countable basis of open sets I have a problem with (ii)...- elarson89

Maple How to Graph f(x,y) = 0: A Quick Guide for Maple Users
graph f(x,y) = 0 (ignore the in maple part please!) NOTE: please ignore the in maple part of this! hi everyone, is there a quick way i can graph f(x,y) = 0 in maple? I've ran into this problem a couple of times where f cannot be separated very easily. Or are there any tricks to parametrize f...- elarson89

Book containing taylor series expansions
Hello, I am looking for a resource (preferably a textbook) to help me with nonlinear, multivariable functions and working through taylor series expansions of them. My calculus book only covers single variable expansions unfortunately. Thanks- elarson89

Graduate Change of dependent variable in a DE
Hi all, I have what should hopefully be a quick question. Given an ODE of the following form (sorry no tex) y = y(x) with y' defined as differentiation wrt (with respect to) x y'' + y' + y = 0 and I want to make a change a variables A = x/a (for some constant a) so that we define a new...- elarson89

Maple Help with a loglogplot in maple please
genius! I had boltzmann's constant to be of order 10^23, not 10^-23. Thanks a ton!- elarson89

Maple Help with a loglogplot in maple please
Help with a loglogplot in maple please! Hi all, I have some physics homework that I'm trying to finish tonight. I have it all done and everything, and now all i have to do is make a plot. I'm trying to do a loglogplot of Planck's Law. Here's my code: with(plots); c:=2.998*10^8...- elarson89

Graduate Partial Differential Equations Help
Do you know the textbook that will be used? When your prof told you that advanced calc would be helpful, he probably is just looking for a solid grasp of the calculus that you have taken already, as well as some vector calculus. Derivations of the heat and wave eq, as well as some important...- elarson89

Undergrad Euler's Forumla, Trig Addition, and Equating Coefficients
there's, only one addition formula for sine... and then there is the euler's formula e^ix=... and only one way to equate coefficients... I would write them out but I don't know how to embed tex.- elarson89

Undergrad Euler's Forumla, Trig Addition, and Equating Coefficients
One can look into any precalculus book and find a proof of the addition formulas of sine and cosine. Though as most are aware there is a quick way to get the formulas by using Euler's Formula. But to get the formulas by eulers formula, you must equate coefficients with respect to the imaginary...- elarson89

Graduate Proof for the following statement Not Semi-simple
One way you can visualize it is by using some geometry. Your example: if its my car, then its red. Think of a small circle, in that circle put "my car". Then put that circle in a larger circle, and lable the large circle, "red". Now you can see if you pick your car, you have to pick red. Now if...- elarson89

Which is Better for Grad School: C Grade or Withdrawal?
I can't replace the grade on it, so flunking it isn't an option, and i don't think i will be retaking it either, though i might change my mind down the road on retaking it.- elarson89

Which is Better for Grad School: C Grade or Withdrawal?
Hi everyone, I have a quick question, hopefully. What do you think would look better to a grad school, or rather, what would be the lesser evil, getting a C in a non major course, or a big fat W? If it matters, I have 3.7-3.8 gpa, and my lowest grade so far is a B+ (senior standing but with a...- elarson89

High School How can you multiply two negative numbers?
I haven't read all 5 pages but i understand the question. I want to restate it because I am a bit confused on it too, but in more of a general sense. It's more intuitive to use the natural numbers in math, but somewhere along the line multiplication was generalized to include decimal...- elarson89

Undergrad Will the title of my major have any effect on graduate school?
I'm not quite sure on what I'll go to grad school for, but probably in physics and may pursue a higher degree in astrophysics. So far I've taken diffy q, intro to linear algebra, and a combinatorics class. I'm not sure what my favorite is but i really enjoyed both diffy q and combinatorics...- elarson89

Graduate Minimizing Area Bound by Parabola and Normal Chord: Putnam 1951 A6
If you are familiar with the pigeon hole principle (PHP), this problem is pretty straight forward. If you don't know the PHP, it's simple enough, and goes something like this. If you have n+1 pigeons but only n pigeonholes, then there is at least one pigeonhole with 2 or more pigeons...- elarson89
