Designing a UAV: Airfoil Selection Criteria
hi, i am a mechanical engineer currently working on the design of a UAV. Our rough sketch kind of resembles Burt Rutan's Long-EZ or Velocity. I am attaching a couple of sketches of the aircraft which my team and i have constructed using XFLR 5. We will also be using XFLR 5 and Profili for...- kevjcarvalho

What Are the Wing-Like Extensions on this Plane?
What is this? I got this picture from the net. This plane participated in SAE Aero. Wanted to know what the two wing-like extensions from the wingfence were. I was thinking they could be wingtips and serve in reducing drag and still direct flow as if there was an entire wing in their place...- kevjcarvalho

RC Aircraft Stability: Neutral or Instability?
ok.So should it be light stability or neutral??. Just trying out with canards.- kevjcarvalho

RC Aircraft Stability: Neutral or Instability?
At the extreme limits the canards will stall, not the wings thereby preventing the wing from stalling. Also the CG is ahead of the AC of the wing. Want to know whether to keep neutral stability or static instability between the extreme limits. Nice to see u here.- kevjcarvalho

Investigating Propeller Slipstream Effect on Aircraft Tail
i think there will be lot of stability issues. I'm too trying to find the way to calculate the slipstream effect and find its path. Maybe using CFD or something. Maybe by keeping the horizontal tail at an height form the fuselage you can reduce the effect. Check it out.- kevjcarvalho

RC Aircraft Stability: Neutral or Instability?
For an RC aircraft which i am working on i was thinking about having static stability at the extreme limits of pitching to prevent stalling and further instability, but i was wondering what to have between the limits neutral static stability or static instability. Static instability may help the...- kevjcarvalho

Propeller Slipstream & Tailplane Instability
Is the effect that the propeller slipstream (i.e the helix) hits the tailplane causing much instability quite significant such that if u are using a tractor propeller a single rudder won't work creating the need for two rudders away from the slipstream path??- kevjcarvalho

Profile Drag and Pressure Drag?
Thats true, but what is profile drag. Is it pressure drag, skin friction drag, or drag due to frontal area??- kevjcarvalho

Profile Drag and Pressure Drag?
I tried but they are telling me that profile drag is skin friction and pressure drag...the thing is i read the following line in raymer ' For many aerodynamic calculations, it has been traditional to separate the airfoil into its thickness distribution and zero thickness camber line. The former...- kevjcarvalho

Why Does Low Level, High Speed Flight Decrease Aircraft Efficiency?
hey, I was reading Aircraft Design: A Conceptual Approach by Raymer and i came across the following line. ' The aerodynamic efficiency of an aircraft, expressed as the lift to drag ratio is greatly reduced during low level, high speed flight as well is its engine efficiency. ' Can someone...- kevjcarvalho
