Graduate M67 Cluster Study: Books & Articles on Dynamics & Open Clusters
Hi, I am looking to do a study on the M67 cluster, and I would appreciate suggestions on books and articles on the topic and a little bit on open clusters in general. I have found very little information on how M67 affects the dynamics of the galaxy (part of the galaxy neighborhood). There are...- kr75

Undergrad Positional Astronomy: Zenith, celestial poles and sidereal time
Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation and taking time out for it. I have understood most of the concepts since I read and re-read about those to get it right. I still have some trouble when solving problems that relate to finding the position of stars in the sky at a given time, but I guess...- kr75

Undergrad Positional Astronomy: Zenith, celestial poles and sidereal time
I have a little trouble with positional astronomy so I wanted to clarify a few things to get my understanding right. The imaginary celestial poles are located directly above (or below) the poles of the Earth, right? And the Zenith is the position in the sky that a person would look if one was...- kr75

High School Amateur Astronomy - Learn What to Look For in the Sky
Stellarium is an incredibly useful software. I live in a city where there is far too much pollution and find it very convenient to use this software. The software simulation also allows you to turn on and off atmospheric effects. I try practicing by using the grids, star locations, constellation...- kr75

Programs Can I PhD in astronomy with an electronics engg degree?
I have read the thread, however I feel this question (in my case) is different from the points mentioned there. While my major subject in my applications will be physics and astronomy, in case I fail to get an admit and as a back up I take up a Masters' course in electrical engineering, can I...- kr75

Programs Can I PhD in astronomy with an electronics engg degree?
Hi, I am currently studying electronics engineering in India and I plan to start applying for the fall 2013 semester within the next 2-3 weeks. I am pursuing a Masters' and PhD in astronomy and I will apply for the same. However, if I do not get an admit for this course from the universities I...- kr75

Graduate Trying to understand relativity
yes that does help. Of course i will have to go over it again till I understand perfectly by myself, but this helps me put it into perspective in a better way. Thanks George- kr75

Graduate Trying to understand relativity
Ok but I'm still confused as to why for a person outside the spaceship, the ray of light reaches the detector behind it before it reaches the detector in front of it. Since the spaceship is moving at a velocity 'u' wouldn't the light source and the detectors be moving with the same velocity too...- kr75

Graduate Trying to understand relativity
I am a novice in relativity as of now and I'm still learning about it. Currently reading Feynman's lectures and an example has confused me. So here it is, Consider a spaceship moving at a velocity u. If a light source is placed equidistant from two detectors at opposite ends, one in front of...- kr75

Graduate Question about Schrodinger equation
Partial derivative i.e. if ψ is a function of two variables x and y, then it will be differentiated only with respect to x and the part of the function consisting of variable y will be treated as a constant. You may need to read up on it to fully grasp the concept of partial derivatives- kr75

How did you get into Astronomy/Astrophysics?
That is a good point but unlike that in black holes, believing in a Creator would transcend our knowledge of all known levels of existence. I mean, though the black holes are still a mystery, we do have visual proof that they exist. Also, the big problem would be figuring out how the Creator...- kr75

How did you get into Astronomy/Astrophysics?
i had an inherent love towards physics. i started reading books, articles, etc on astronomy and astrophysics and after that when i looked at the stars, what struck me was that we are always looking back into time. we can never know what is happening presently with an interstellar body which is...- kr75
