    we can prove that √5 is irrational through contradiction and same applies for √3. but can we prove that √5 + √3 is irrational by contradiction?

    :confused: I am not sure but it seems easier to calculate Var[X]= E[X^2]- (E[X])^2 you already have E[X]. you can try to calculate E[X^2] by conditioning on Y.
