How Do You Calculate the Maximum Bolt Angle Through a Flanged Hole?
Thanks. Yeah, as soon after I posted this, I drew it out and it became a lot clearer :)- MJCfromCT

How Do You Calculate the Maximum Bolt Angle Through a Flanged Hole?
I have a flange of known thickness, with a bolt hole of a known diameter through it. I am trying to calculate the maximum angle off from the centerline through the bolt hole that the bolt will be able to pass ( I know the max diameter of the bolt as well ). Is there a formula for this, given...- MJCfromCT

Undergrad List of materials and their damping properties
Hi all, I've finished a hypothetical problem in which I have determined the optimum damping ratio $\zeta$ for a specific system. This $\zeta$ value (0.265 in my case) minimizes the peak force transmitted through an object. My next step is to take this $\zeta$ value and find some sort of... -

Plastic deformation, or just cracks?
Hi everyone, I'm having a bit of difficulty interperting the results of an ANSYS model I'm currently running. This is of a small, thin piece of metal (0.018" in thickness, ~1"x1" length x width), that I am fixing at one end and displacing the other end ~0.015". Essentially this is a...- MJCfromCT

ANSYS Element for 2D Table Top Modeling w/ Z-Dir Load
Thank you for the reply. It has been a while since I have used ANSYS, and Shell elements must have slipped my mind. :)- MJCfromCT

ANSYS Element for 2D Table Top Modeling w/ Z-Dir Load
I am attempting to model a simple 2D surface in ANSYS that is subjected to a load in the 3rd dimension. My surface is a table top, in the X-Y plane. I have modeled it in 2D, and will give it a "simulated thickness". However, I am not sure which element type I can use to apply a force on the top...- MJCfromCT

How Does Heat Flow Direction Relate to the Second Law of Thermodynamics?
Thank you for the reply. I agree with the quotes you have listed, but I am unsure as to how they help. I agree that they discuss the means by which entropy increases, but I am unsure as to how the increase in entropy relates to the diffusion of heat from a high temperature area to a low...- MJCfromCT

How Does Heat Flow Direction Relate to the Second Law of Thermodynamics?
"Proof" of heat flow direction? Hi everyone, I have a homework problem that basically says to prove that heat is conducted from a high temperature area to a low temperature area: Homework Statement Consider a one-dimensional conductor, stretching from x=0 to x=L. The two ends are...- MJCfromCT

MATLAB Solving Diff. Equation in MATLAB: Need Help
Thank you for the explanation, CompuChip. Unfortunately, I am pretty tied to MATLAB, as I don't have access to a program like Mathematica, although I will try to get access to it. I'm glad to find out that this is a relatively simple one that should be able to be solved without much...- MJCfromCT

MATLAB Solving Diff. Equation in MATLAB: Need Help
Thanks for the reply, I have the actual equations for those forces, I just didn't write them out before to save some time. :) F_rho = 2*pi*r*rho*(cos(theta1)-cos(theta2)) F_mu = 8*pi*mu*l*V + 8*pi*mu_g*(L-l)*V F_g = pi*sigma*r^2*l*g*sin(phi) I apologize for the horrible formatting, I'd...- MJCfromCT

MATLAB Solving Diff. Equation in MATLAB: Need Help
Hi everyone, Its been an incredibly long time since I've had to solve a differential equation in MATLAB, and I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. I have the following equation: m*(dV/dt) = F_rho - F_mu + F_g the F_rho term includes just constants that I...- MJCfromCT

Information Regarding Surface Modifiers
Hi everyone, I am doing research on flows in capillary tubes with wetting discontinuities, and I am needing to find some information on coatings that can produce these wetting discontinuities.
