Permanent magnets: do electrons attract each other?

Thanks! Now I understand it by accepting the rules of relativity...the only thing I have to understand now is why objects contract when they move...

Permanent magnets: do electrons attract each other?

When reading about the quantum explanation of permanent magnets, I only read about electron spins. Sure, but are they behind that aggressive attractive force existing between opposite poles? Common sense tells me the only things that should attract each other in a metal are electrons and...

    How do virtual particles mediate?

By the way, am I right that the "field information" travels at the speed of light? So if we move one particle, the other one that it interacts with will react a time later as if the information traveled at lightspeed? Because that would be at least something we know about fields.

    How do virtual particles mediate?

Oh, okay. So we basically have no idea how the particles know about each other's presence. These virtual particles are just a trick, right? *Sigh* I should have known.

    How do virtual particles mediate?

As far as I know, forces are supposed to be mediated by virtual particles. Let's take the example of a magnetic field, mediated by photons. This seems to be a good idea, because it sort of eliminates the nasty concept of a field, which is just an abstract concept. This has been bothering me...

Busting the myth of the observer: the double slit experiment

Talking about probability... I also have a problem with that. Again, it suggests that "in any moment, it is impossible to calculate an electron's position, it only has a probability of being in a region". Isn't it that WE are unable to calculate it? Because as soon as we measure it, we interfere...

Busting the myth of the observer: the double slit experiment

Wow, I caused an avalanche of posts. Good thing. When you guys are saying consciousness interferes with quantum phenomena do you mean that the magnetic field produced by neural activity in our brain causes it? Because there is nothing special about that. Guess what: our consciousness is so...

    Li-ion battery positive electrode attraction

"After" as in the spatial sense, not temporal. I could have said "following" but it has a temporal meaning as well :-) So the Li ions are sort of dragged along. Okay, thank you, then!

    Li-ion battery positive electrode attraction

Oh, I'm getting it, then. So it is actually Li metal incarcerated in the graphite. By closing the circuit, we allow an oxidation process to start, so the electrons can flow thru the circuit (ripped off from the Li metal) and the resulting Li ions migrate to the other side, going after the electrons?

    Li-ion battery positive electrode attraction

Sorry, I was under the impression the graphite was full of Li ions, presenting an overall positive charge. (Neutral graphite+Li ions=positive.) Or do the additional electrons come from the electrolyte to the graphite? That's my problem, all those nice drawings and animation are misleading in...

What kind of energy is released during combustion

Okay. So when the oxidation does not produce visible flames, is the heat produced by molecular movement (the newly formed molecules gain momentum), or is it infrared radiation because of the new energy levels of the electrons? So which one is the cause and which one is the effect? It looks like...

    Li-ion battery positive electrode attraction

So some ions diffuse to the other side and will form a weak positive side there. But won't there be much more Li ions in the graphite still, so won't that side be stronger? How come the electrons want to migrate to the other side where there is just a "thin layer" of Li ions that diffused there?

What kind of energy is released during combustion

Well, that's exactly what I'm asking here. In what form is the chemical energy released? Does it cause a sudden conformational change in a molecule (that's movement again), or are the newly formed molecules suddenly repelled because of their electron structure (movement again), or are the...

    Li-ion battery positive electrode attraction

I don't understant how the positive electrode can attract both electrons and the positive Li ions as they both flow to it. Also, the way to start the whole process is to let the electrons flow, right? (Close the circuit.) Without it, the ions also don't want to start flowing, although there is...

What kind of energy is released during combustion

I always like to be specific when talking about "energy released". It is too vague for me, there is what to specify there. Take the example of the ATP molecule. When you break the bond, it will be the phosphate groups repelling each other, so it will be their kinetic energy that results in...
