Mosaic in Lod Israel - way cool !

This mosaic from antiquity recently caught my attention.
At first they found the tail of a tiger and eventually found a near
complete mosaic floor depicting birds, fish, animals, plants and
Roman-era ships. It is about 1700 yrs old. (made in 3rd century).
What is amazing, the artwork and colors are remarkably intact. :smile:

First discovered in 1996 during construction on the Jerusalem–Tel Aviv highway in Lod (formerly Lydda), Israel, this large and impressive mosaic floor has only recently been uncovered and was displayed briefly in situ to the public in Israel during the summer of 2009.

Yes, it is sad how many of these pieces may have been lost or destroyed,
but with discoveries like this, there is hope we may yet find more.
(this piece was hiding only three feet below the ground).

Terrific! I'm amazed at their technique for handling the mosaic. They basically peeled it away from the soil, rolled it up and transported like a big heavy carpet - apparently with little (or no) damage?
