A user is seeking a specific quote from a renowned physicist related to the conflict between theoretical physics and established principles, particularly referencing Maxwell and thermodynamics. The quote suggests that disagreement with Maxwell or experimentalists is less critical than conflicting with the second law of thermodynamics. The user notes that Google struggles with fuzzy searches, making it difficult to find the exact wording. Another participant humorously mentions finding a related reference to Eddington. The discussion highlights challenges in locating precise scientific quotations online.

Hello forum!

I once read a quote from a renowned physicist but I do not rememer his name or the quote.

It was something like: if your theory disagreed with Maxwell or with experimentalists, it was their problem, but if it disagreed with 2nd thermo then you were finished.

Google aren't very good at fuzzy searches.

So I know that electrons are fundamental, there's no 'material' that makes them up, it's like talking about a colour itself rather than a car or a flower. Now protons and neutrons and quarks and whatever other stuff is there fundamentally, I want someone to kind of teach me these, I have a lot of questions that books might not give the answer in the way I understand. Thanks
