AI Thread Summary
The heliotail, discovered by the IBEX spacecraft, is a feature of the solar system resembling a comet's tail as it travels through the Milky Way. NASA announced this discovery, highlighting the unique shape and dynamics of the solar system's movement. The solar system is moving approximately 60 degrees left of the Galactic Center's direction. The discussion includes references to articles and images that provide further insights into the heliotail and its implications for understanding solar system trajectories. This discovery enhances our knowledge of the solar system's interaction with the surrounding interstellar medium.

interesting, can those scientists tell what the trajectory of the solar system is?

cenzi, the link below may answer your question. I hope it does. We are moving roughly 60ish degrees to the left of the Galactic Centers direction and a bit left of Altair.

Asteroid, Data - 1.2% risk of an impact on December 22, 2032. The estimated diameter is 55 m and an impact would likely release an energy of 8 megatons of TNT equivalent, although these numbers have a large uncertainty - it could also be 1 or 100 megatons. Currently the object has level 3 on the Torino scale, the second-highest ever (after Apophis) and only the third object to exceed level 1. Most likely it will miss, and if it hits then most likely it'll hit an ocean and be harmless, but...
