AI Thread Summary
Space has a distinct smell likely due to residues from space suits and materials encountered during extravehicular activities. Astronauts have reported that the smell may originate from outgassing of plasticizers and cleaning agents used on their suits. The absence of familiar odors in space can be disorienting, leading astronauts to seek out scents from items like lemon cleaning wipes. Some chemists are attempting to recreate the smell, suggesting it may resemble ozone or the scent produced by ionized particles. Overall, the unique odor of space remains a topic of interest and investigation.

This is just weird, and probably has a good explanation.. But how can a space suit or space have a distinct smell? Could the smell be coming from particles off their space suits? If so, how/why?

What were they working on outside? It could be whatever residue might be on the parts of the space station they were working on that rubbed off on their suits.

Probbaly plasticisors and cleaning residue outgassing from the suits.

The skylab astronauts mentioned one of the disorientating things was missing the smell of anything - the air cleaning system so efficently removed any chemical residue from the air.
They said they opened the lemon cleaning wipes that came with the food just to have something to smell.

He said that it smelled similar to using an arc welder, so I would guess that it is probably the smell of ions and such deposited on the suit. Maybe some of that is ozone, but I would guess that a lot of it is lighter particles.

Today at about 4:30 am I saw the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter, where they were about the width of the full moon, or one half degree apart. Did anyone else see it? Edit: The moon is 2,200 miles in diameter and at a distance of 240,000 miles. Thereby it subtends an angle in radians of 2,200/240,000=.01 (approximately). With pi radians being 180 degrees, one radian is 57.3 degrees, so that .01 radians is about .50 degrees (angle subtended by the moon). (.57 to be more exact, but with...
