AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around choosing between a ~12mm eyepiece (EP) with a barlow or a single high-quality ~6mm EP within a budget of $120. The Baader Planetarium Hyperion is a potential option, with various focal lengths (5, 8, 10, or 13mm) being considered. Participants suggest exploring eBay for affordable planetary and wide field eyepieces. The decision ultimately hinges on whether versatility with a barlow or a dedicated high-quality EP is preferred. The conversation emphasizes balancing budget constraints with the desire for quality optics.

I'm trying to keep my EP budget around ~$120 for now. I can't decide between getting a ~12mm EP and a barlow or just one good ~6mm EP. I'm thinking about getting a Baader Planetarium Hyperion, but can't decide between 5, 8, 10 or 13mm and/or barlow to go with it.

You may wish to peruse ebay, as well. You can usually find a variety of both planetary and wide field eyepieces that are relatively inexpensive.

Today at about 4:30 am I saw the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter, where they were about the width of the full moon, or one half degree apart. Did anyone else see it? Edit: The moon is 2,200 miles in diameter and at a distance of 240,000 miles. Thereby it subtends an angle in radians of 2,200/240,000=.01 (approximately). With pi radians being 180 degrees, one radian is 57.3 degrees, so that .01 radians is about .50 degrees (angle subtended by the moon). (.57 to be more exact, but with...
