Acetanilide Solubility: Is It Soluble?

AI Thread Summary
Acetanilide's solubility in petroleum ether is debated, with some sources suggesting it is sparingly soluble, while others report it as insoluble. One user confirmed that acetanilide is definitely soluble in diethyl ether. The discussion highlights that a small sample size in excess petroleum ether might lead to complete dissolution, but it is more likely that the sample was too small to be visible. Overall, caution is advised when making assumptions about solubility based on limited experimental results.

Hey guys.

Really amateurish question but I just wanted to check something. I was doing an experiment a little while ago and from what I recall my acetanilide sample was soluble in petroleum ether but I just read somewhere that some other fellow got a result suggesting it is insoluble. So my question is is it soluble? I know it dissolved fairly happily in ether but I don't want to make any assumptions.

Petroleum ether or diethyl ether?

I know for certain that it is soluble in diethyl ether but uncertain for pet. ether.

Very sparingly soluble in pet ether.

Thanks.

When I did the test the sample was quite small and the pet ether in excess so that could explain why my sample dissolved in its entirety?

I don't think so. It's more likely that the sample was so small you lost sight of it.

I want to test a humidity sensor with one or more saturated salt solutions. The table salt that I have on hand contains one of two anticaking agents, calcium silicate or sodium aluminosilicate. Will the presence of either of these additives (or iodine for that matter) significantly affect the equilibrium humidity? I searched and all the how-to-do-it guides did not address this question. One research paper I found reported that at 1.5% w/w calcium silicate increased the deliquescent point by...
