AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the feasibility of making a living by participating in medical tests or studies, often referred to as being a "lab rat." Participants express skepticism about the viability of this as a long-term career, highlighting the potential dangers and ethical concerns involved. While some studies may offer compensation sufficient for short-term needs, such as tuition or vacations, the consensus is that it is unlikely to provide a stable income or career path. Concerns are raised about the risks associated with participating in high-stakes studies, including health implications and the perception of one's legitimacy as a test subject over time. Overall, the idea of relying on such participation as a sustainable livelihood is met with caution and skepticism.

I want to know about having tests done on you. Are there any places that will pay you to become a labrat? Enough that you can live off of it and make a career out of it.

You might want to watch "Tales from the Crypt" --- Ulrich the Undying, or some such similar, is a relevant episode.

Legitimate labs? A living? Don't even try taking that to a mortgage company and applying for a home loan.

If you enroll in some really time-consuming or risky studies, you might be paid enough to cover tuition at a state university, or to take a nice vacation, but you're not going to be able to become a professional lab rat and earn a living off it.

Can you imagine being a professional lab rat?!

I bet after a couple years you wouldn't even be a legitimate human to test on.

Thread 'My experience as a hostage'

Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
