Calculate Coefficient of Friction for a 200kg Load on a Horizontal Plane

In summary, friction is a force that resists motion between two surfaces due to microscopic roughness and interlocking irregularities. It can be measured using a frictionometer and is represented by the coefficient of friction. The three main types of friction are static, kinetic, and rolling. Friction can either help or hinder motion, and it can be reduced by using lubricants or smoother surfaces. However, it is sometimes necessary for proper functioning and cannot always be eliminated.

Homework Statement

A load of 200kg rests on a horizontal plane.A horizontal force of 196N is needed to overcome friction.Find the coefficient of friction

Homework Equations

F(gravity)=W=mg
F(friction)= (mu)N

The Attempt at a Solution

W=mg
W=200(9.8)=1960N
This then is the F(normal) also.

Now
F(fric)=(mu)N
196=(mu)1960
mu=196/1960=0.2=answer

thanks in advance

looks good... except for the part 196/1960 = ... well not .2 XD

Thanks for all the help.Yes, it was a typo...i know it should be 0.1 :)

1. What is friction?

Friction is a force that resists motion between two surfaces that are in contact with each other. It is caused by the microscopic roughness of the surfaces and the interlocking of their irregularities.

2. How is friction measured?

Friction can be measured using a device called a frictionometer, which measures the force required to move one object over another. The unit of measurement for friction is called the coefficient of friction.

3. What are the different types of friction?

The three main types of friction are static friction, kinetic friction, and rolling friction. Static friction occurs when two surfaces are not moving relative to each other, kinetic friction occurs when they are moving, and rolling friction occurs when one surface is rolling over another.

4. How does friction affect motion?

Friction can either help or hinder motion. It can help by providing necessary traction for walking or driving, but it can hinder by creating resistance and slowing down moving objects. In some cases, friction can also cause wear and tear on surfaces.

5. How can friction be reduced?

Friction can be reduced by using lubricants, such as oil or grease, between two surfaces. It can also be reduced by using smoother surfaces or by adding rollers or wheels to reduce direct contact between surfaces. However, in some cases, friction is necessary for proper functioning, so it cannot always be completely eliminated.
