AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the relationship between the Big Bang and white holes, with speculation suggesting that black holes could lead to other universes or Big Bangs, though evidence for this is lacking and it is not part of mainstream theory. It is emphasized that black holes and white holes are defined within the context of spacetime rather than as characteristics of the universe itself. Cosmologists remain uncertain about the validity of the Big Bang theory, and even if it is correct, distinguishing it as a white hole is deemed unlikely. The consensus leans toward greater confidence in the Big Bang theory compared to the white hole hypothesis. Overall, the conversation highlights the complexities and uncertainties in cosmological theories regarding the origins of the universe.

was the big bang actually a white hole?

Maybe...there is some speculation that black holes lead to other universes/Big Bangs...but there's no real evidence there and it's certainly not part of any mainstream theory.

But probably not...black holes/white holes are objects defined within the context of spacetime...not a characteristic of all spacetime (i.e., the universe) itself.

Cosmologists do not know for sure that the Big Bang theory is correct. Even if it were correct, I do not think they would be able to tell if the Big Bang was a white hole.

they're more sure about the big bang theory than they are about the white hole theory, that's for sure.

This thread is dedicated to the beauty and awesomeness of our Universe. If you feel like it, please share video clips and photos (or nice animations) of space and objects in space in this thread. Your posts, clips and photos may by all means include scientific information; that does not make it less beautiful to me (n.b. the posts must of course comply with the PF guidelines, i.e. regarding science, only mainstream science is allowed, fringe/pseudoscience is not allowed). n.b. I start this...
Asteroid, Data - 1.2% risk of an impact on December 22, 2032. The estimated diameter is 55 m and an impact would likely release an energy of 8 megatons of TNT equivalent, although these numbers have a large uncertainty - it could also be 1 or 100 megatons. Currently the object has level 3 on the Torino scale, the second-highest ever (after Apophis) and only the third object to exceed level 1. Most likely it will miss, and if it hits then most likely it'll hit an ocean and be harmless, but...
