Books on Character theory and category theory

AI Thread Summary
Recommended books for studying character theory include "Character Theory of Finite Groups" by Isaacs, which is noted for its rigorous mathematical approach without skipping essential proofs. For category theory, "Categories for the Working Mathematician" by Mac Lane is highly regarded for its depth and clarity. The discussion highlights a common trend in literature focusing on finite groups, potentially due to their foundational role in the field, though the user expresses interest in broader applications beyond this scope. The mention of characters in the context of Lie groups suggests a desire to explore their more general properties beyond finite groups.

As the title says i would like to get recommended some books on Character theory and category theory. I like my books to be really matematically and to not skip corners, but I don't like books that think that I'm a master mind and just write 'clear' or 'easy' instead of proving the theorem.

Anyone got some ideas ?

Characters (of finite groups): Isaacs. (The term characters is very ambiguous.)
Categories: Mac Lane.

Are there any reason that most books are on finite groups when i make a search on it?

I don't know much about characters, only seen them in my course on lie groups, but i guess they aren't on finite groups.

Hi, I have notice that Ashcroft, Mermin and Wei worked at a revised edition of the original solid state physics book (here). The book, however, seems to be never available. I have also read that the reason is related to some disputes related to copyright. Do you have any further information about it? Did you have the opportunity to get your hands on this revised edition? I am really curious about it, also considering that I am planning to buy the book in the near future... Thanks!
