AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the feasibility of building a cruise missile for under $5,000, raising questions about motivations and implications. Participants speculate on the potential uses of such a weapon, with Iraq cited as a context for its relevance. The conversation highlights that while $4,500 may be insufficient for a fully functional missile, it is still possible to create a prototype, emphasizing the engineering capabilities of college students and the historical context of government-funded projects exploring advanced weaponry. The focus is on the technical challenge rather than the actual intent to deploy such a weapon.

What if you only have $4,500?

You can still build a missle, but someone has to pilot it.

gee, and I've always wondered where terrorists go to get their hands on sophisticated weaponry- now I know."P

Its not about having the cruise missile, its about proving it can be done. A while back (10, 20, 30 years?) the CIA paid a handful of phd physicists to see if they could build a nuclear bomb from scratch just to see if they could.

Any decent group of college engineers can build a cruise missle. $5,000 but it depends of course on how big you want it to be. When I was a senior, one senior design project group built an robotic (autonomous) radio controlled plane. Same thing.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
