AI Thread Summary
Burt Rutan's latest aircraft design, the SkiGull, features an innovative electric docking system with two motors that allow for maneuverability in tight spaces, enhancing safety during engine failures. The SkiGull's design boasts a lift-to-drag ratio of 23, enabling it to glide back to safety if an engine fails, unlike traditional seaplanes. While sketches of the aircraft exist, they are not being released to maintain confidentiality until test flights. The project is currently seeking funding through a Kickstarter campaign, which has raised half of its $80,000 goal with just a day left. The discussion highlights the excitement surrounding the SkiGull and its potential impact on aviation.

Burt Rutan is at it again with a new plane the SkiGull -

"Its docking system is two, 5” diameter electric motors each driving a 27” diameter folding prop. These self-contained units (Off-the-shelf motor, controller, batteries used for giant RC models) mount on each wing. They provide forward or reverse thrust to allow backing up or rotating when docking/beaching in winds. Since the SkiGull has an L/D of 23 (it looks more like a motor glider than other seaplanes/floatplanes), its electric docking system can fly it about 8 miles, which greatly reduces the risk of an engine failure, particularly when operating out of small tree-lined lakes. Every other seaplane has to crash straight forward when an engine fails early in the climb, a SkiGull can fly back to downwind & land on the lake into the wind."

Interesting. Are there any sketches or models yet?

There are sketches, but we have been asked not to release them as Burt wishes to keep the plane secret until it's first test flights. I will keep the thread updated.

So you starting this thread is meant to help out the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign...?

AntennaFilms is sharing details to whet the appetite for the project's Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. About halfway into the monthlong campaign, the effort has raised about half of its $80,000 goal.

Just thought people might be interest - that campaign ends tomorrow, and I will keep the thread updated into the future, there is a ton of information on the plane, but I just posted what might spark people's interest in learning more - here is a better link perhaps:http://aerosociety.com/News/Insight-Blog/2957/Rutan-film-aims-to-inspire-next-generation

Thread 'Turbocharging carbureted petrol 2 stroke engines'
Hi everyone, online I ve seen some images about 2 stroke carbureted turbo (motorcycle derivation engine). Now.. In the past in this forum some members spoke about turbocharging 2 stroke but not in sufficient detail. The intake and the exhaust are open at the same time and there are no valves like a 4 stroke. But if you search online you can find carbureted 2stroke turbo sled or the Am6 turbo. The question is: Is really possible turbocharge a 2 stroke carburated(NOT EFI)petrol engine and...
I need some assistance with calculating hp requirements for moving a load. - The 4000lb load is resting on ball bearing rails so friction is effectively zero and will be covered by my added power contingencies. Load: 4000lbs Distance to travel: 10 meters. Time to Travel: 7.5 seconds Need to accelerate the load from a stop to a nominal speed then decelerate coming to a stop. My power delivery method will be a gearmotor driving a gear rack. - I suspect the pinion gear to be about 3-4in in...
