AI Thread Summary
Software can be patented, but the process is complex and often fraught with challenges. While some argue that software patents hinder innovation, others highlight the potential for inventors in the IT sector to secure patents. The patenting process can lead to confusion, as legal interpretations and requirements vary. Many inventors have experienced difficulties in articulating their software inventions in patent applications, which can result in ownership issues and potential litigation. Overall, while there is an opportunity for inventors in IT to patent their software, it requires careful navigation of legal and technical complexities.

can software be patented?? Is there any opportunity for becoming an inventor in IT?

Hello all,
Can software be patented? I heard that some people say software cannot be patented and some people assume software patents as the obstacles to innovation. Is that true? However, some people say different things.
Can you guys give me an accurate answer based on government official websites? Thanks.

Patenting software is a huge bundle of fail. The short answer is "yes, you can patent software," with a whole bunch of asterisks. Read over the Wikipedia page to get an idea of the issues facing software patents.

As the proud holder of software patent #5,995,974 I would have to agree with "fss"...

After multiple consultations with varying groups of lawyers we ended up with a patent document describing something whereof I couldn't quite grasp the function...even though one of my block-diagrams is included in the actual application. It is now wholly owned by IBM who probably don't realize that they hold the key to years of litigation against anyone who attempts to load a user defined function into a data storage application.

In my discussions elsewhere, I've noticed a lot of disagreement regarding AI. A question that comes up is, "Is AI hype?" Unfortunately, when this question is asked, the one asking, as far as I can tell, may mean one of three things which can lead to lots of confusion. I'll list them out now for clarity. 1. Can AI do everything a human can do and how close are we to that? 2. Are corporations and governments using the promise of AI to gain more power for themselves? 3. Are AI and transhumans...
Thread 'ChatGPT Examples, Good and Bad'
I've been experimenting with ChatGPT. Some results are good, some very very bad. I think examples can help expose the properties of this AI. Maybe you can post some of your favorite examples and tell us what they reveal about the properties of this AI. (I had problems with copy/paste of text and formatting, so I'm posting my examples as screen shots. That is a promising start. But then I provided values V=1, R1=1, R2=2, R3=3 and asked for the value of I. At first, it said...
