AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the feasibility of the Alcubierre drive, with skepticism about its potential due to challenges posed by quantum mechanics and the requirement for exotic matter, which is not believed to exist. Although some experiments by Harold White are mentioned, they are criticized for methodological flaws and lack of support from the scientific community. Serious physicists largely view the Alcubierre drive as a theoretical concept that cannot be physically realized. The consensus is that it remains a speculative idea rather than a viable technology. Overall, the Alcubierre drive is seen as a sci-fi concept rather than a practical solution for space travel.

I am in a discussion with someone about the Alcubierre drive. I have doubts about it and he seems to think that Harold White experiments shows it can be built
I am trying yo get an idea what current thought is on the drive. I know the drive does not violate general relativity but what about quantum mechanics or quantum gravity

He can believe what he likes, the question is do serious physicists think so, and the answer is no. It requires exotic matter (negative mass) that is not believed to exist, and that's just the first of several major problems. It is a sci-fic pipe dream based on math that is not believed to be physically realizable. Google "Sean Carroll Alcubierre drive"

To summarize his comments (his words):

A bit ago, the news streams were once again abuzz with claims that NASA was investigating amazing space drives that violate the laws of physics. And it’s true! If we grant that “NASA” includes “any person employed by NASA,” and “investigating” is defined as “wasting time and money thinking about.”

Harold White experiments
I don't know which specific experiment is being referenced here. The only experiment I have read of his showed a blatant misuse of statistics in order to get a significant result from a data set that did not appear to support the conclusion.

So I know that electrons are fundamental, there's no 'material' that makes them up, it's like talking about a colour itself rather than a car or a flower. Now protons and neutrons and quarks and whatever other stuff is there fundamentally, I want someone to kind of teach me these, I have a lot of questions that books might not give the answer in the way I understand. Thanks
I think it's easist first to watch a short vidio clip I find these videos very relaxing to watch .. I got to thinking is this being done in the most efficient way? The sand has to be suspended in the water to move it to the outlet ... The faster the water , the more turbulance and the sand stays suspended, so it seems to me the rule of thumb is the hose be aimed towards the outlet at all times .. Many times the workers hit the sand directly which will greatly reduce the water...
