AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the futility of voting on the existence of God or the nature of reality, emphasizing that consensus does not equate to truth. It highlights the limitations of human understanding and the influence of biases in shaping opinions. The conversation references the historical context of scientific theories, such as the cosmological constant, to illustrate how prevailing beliefs can change over time and how a vote reflects subjective views rather than objective reality. Ultimately, the argument suggests that current knowledge is limited, and voting on such profound questions yields little meaningful insight.

I won't vote because a vote about the nature of reality means absolutely nothing. If everyone agrees God is . . . that doesn't mean God is. Everyone votes science is . . . that doesn't mean science is.

I was watching a special today on how regretably the idea of a cosmological constant was allowed into theoretical physics. If you took a vote when everybody wanted the universe to be static, guess what the answer would have been; take a vote now and you get different results.

Right now we have no idea what we don't know, and so the experts are "convinced" the universe has to be or can't possibly be certain ways. Take a vote and mostly what you get is people's unsupportable opinions and biases.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
