Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the eligibility of applicants with a previous Master's degree to apply for another Master's program abroad. It explores the variability in application procedures across universities and the implications for candidates seeking further education for career advancement.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants propose that having a Master's degree can be advantageous when applying for another Master's program, as it may enhance an applicant's profile.
  • Others mention that application procedures differ significantly between universities, suggesting that eligibility may vary based on institutional policies.
  • A participant shares a personal experience regarding the recognition of their current university in a specialized field, expressing concern about eligibility for further Master's studies.
  • Another participant argues that there are no rigid rules governing eligibility for graduate studies, indicating that applications are often evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
  • Some participants note that it is possible to transition into a different field for postgraduate studies, as evidenced by examples of individuals shifting from engineering to economics.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that it is possible to apply for a Master's program abroad with a previous Master's degree, but there is no consensus on the specific eligibility criteria, as multiple competing views remain regarding the application process and institutional policies.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the lack of specific eligibility criteria from various universities and the dependence on individual circumstances that may affect application outcomes.

Hi somz, :)

In my opinion the answer is yes. And there are many whom I know who have several masters degrees in multiple fields. Most of the application procedures and how they select the candidates varies from university to university, however I think having a masters degree is rather a good thing in applying for another masters. There are also situations which I know where a person having a masters degree applies for a Phd abroad and the university offers a masters, instead of directly selecting him/her for the Phd program. This probably happens due to the fact that the university thinks the candidate should have more prerequisites to start a Phd.

actually the university from where i'll be getting my masters degree is not so recognized for my particular branch. mine is a specialized branch and my university is recognized for those core engineering branches. so i thought of going for another majors from abroad. since i am not at all interested for a phd rather i wanted to go for masters only for better job prospects to be frank ,i felt so bad when someone told me that i won't be eligible for a masters degree again. but u made my day ..seriously :p thanks a lot :)

You are welcome. I don't think there is a rigid set of rules when defining eligibility for grad studies. I believe applications are assessed in a case by case basis. I also know a person who had his undergrad in engineering and then did his Phd in Economics. I believe that getting entered into a postgrad program even in a very different field to what you have done in undergrad is not impossible. :)

thank you so much again :)
