AI Thread Summary
Changing usernames is possible by emailing or messaging an admin with the desired new username. The topic frequently resurfaces, suggesting a need for clearer guidelines or warnings during the sign-up process. Some users propose reinstating an FAQ link or adding information to the forum library to assist new members. Despite the recurring discussions, username change requests are infrequent, averaging about one per quarter, and are managed effectively by the admins. Overall, enhancing communication about username policies could improve user experience.

Is it possible to change our usernames? (Didn't think too much about mine when I created it)

Last I remember, yes it is possible.

Email or PM an admin with your request and new choice of username.

This subject is like a bad penny; it just keeps coming back. Perhaps there should be something about it in the rules? Or in a sticky? Or maybe a strong warning in the explanation before choosing a username?

It doesn't come up very often, so probably doesn't warrant a stickie. Just PM a Mentor in the forums you frequent, and if that doesn't get a response soon, Report one of your posts to make the request.

Actually, I think it does come up pretty often. I agree with Lisab. If there's a way to put a more detailed explanation or warning into the sign-up process, that would be the best approach. Otherwise, I think we need an FAQ link back with information about username changes in it. We used to have an FAQ link, but it has disappeared, and might have mostly included outdated FAQs. Or, maybe it can be put into the library?

Well, based on the number of warnings the Mentors issue to new posters about not reading the rules, I'm skeptical about adding anything there making any difference. We get about 1 name change request per quarter, which seems to be handled fairly well by the Admins, IMO.

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
