Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the quality and difficulty of Chinese mathematics and physics textbooks at the undergraduate and graduate levels, particularly focusing on whether these books contain challenging problems.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses uncertainty about the quality of Chinese mathematics and physics textbooks, asking if they contain many challenging problems.
  • Another participant, drawing a comparison, suggests that if Croatia has good undergraduate books, then China likely does as well.
  • A different participant questions the need for Chinese textbooks if the original poster speaks English well.
  • There is a mention that some Chinese textbooks may have been translations of Russian textbooks, although this is noted as potentially incorrect.
  • A later reply asserts that most Chinese math and physics textbooks are extremely difficult and filled with hard problems, indicating a strong opinion on their quality.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion includes multiple competing views regarding the quality and difficulty of Chinese textbooks, with no clear consensus reached among participants.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the availability and quality of textbooks are not fully explored, and there may be a dependence on personal experiences and translations that are not addressed.

I don't know if there's anyone here from China, but I'll make this question the same way. I'd like to know if the Chinese books of Mathematics and Physics at undergraduate and graduate level are good (that is, if these books contain many challenging problems)?

I don't speak Chinese but I speak Croatian, and I can tell that there are good math and phys undergraduate books in Croatian. If little Croatia has good undergraduate books, I am absolutely convinced that China has them too.

Unless you used a translator, it appears that you speak English quite well; why do you need Chinese textbooks?

If I recall correctly, some of the books used in China back in the day, were translations of Russian textbooks? I can be wrong.
