Courses Choose C++ and Fortran: Advice Needed

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the choice between taking C++ or Fortran as part of a program requirement. The original poster notes that most peers are opting for C++, but they are considering taking both languages. Responses emphasize that learning one language makes it easier to learn the other, with a strong recommendation to focus on C++ due to its broader applicability outside of physics. There is also advice to self-study Fortran if necessary, rather than enrolling in a course. Additionally, there are suggestions to seek a new advisor due to dissatisfaction with current advisory meetings. Overall, the consensus leans towards prioritizing C++ while independently acquiring Fortran knowledge.

My program only requires that I take C++ or Fortran. It seems like most students I have asked are only taking C++, I'm thinking of doing both. I'm planning on asking my advisor as well, but so far I've been really underwhelmed with my meetings with him. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Once you learn one, you can learn the other. You're more likely to use C++ (especially if you wander outside of physics). Also, get a new advisor :-)

Yes, no sense in taking courses in both, do C++, pick up Fortran on your own if you need to for some reason.

Learn it all by yourself, nowadays no need for courses...

Awesome thanks!

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
