SUMMARY

This forum discussion centers around a collection of science jokes, particularly those involving mathematics and physics. Notable jokes include a mathematician with a dog and cow discussing knot theory, and a play on Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. The humor often relies on advanced concepts such as the Jones polynomial and topological invariants, showcasing a blend of wit and scientific terminology. The conversation also touches on the cultural significance of these jokes within the scientific community.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of knot theory and the Jones polynomial
  • Familiarity with Heisenberg's uncertainty principle
  • Basic knowledge of topology and topological invariants
  • Awareness of mathematical humor and its conventions
NEXT STEPS
  • Explore the concept of knot theory in mathematics
  • Learn about the Jones polynomial and its applications
  • Study Heisenberg's uncertainty principle in quantum mechanics
  • Investigate the role of humor in scientific communication
USEFUL FOR

Mathematicians, physicists, educators, and anyone interested in the intersection of humor and science will benefit from this discussion.

I asked the librarian for books on paranoia. She said "they're behind you."
For British readers, that joke also works for "pantomimes".
Oh no, it doesn't.
Oh yes, it does.

This is a temporary walkway decoration for the local high school graduation ceremony next week. It leads from the courtyard into the auditorium where the ceremony will be held. I hope the HS science teacher did not help to design it...

It doesn't take into account the people who aren't quite all there.

Yesterday, I almost posted this one, then I found out that there was an actual map like that made for 1860:

Only in the USA.

This reminded me of this rather disturbing fact:

Globally, the average number of skeletons inside people is slightly more than one.

Yes. A shameful part of US history overall. The 3/5 aspect specifically is in the US constitution Article I., section 2. For the purposes of representation, each non-free person (i.e., slaves) only counted as three fifth of a person. Indians (Native Americans) who weren't taxed didn't count at all.

This was later undone by the 13th and 14th amendments.

Indeed, this notion holds true today for undergraduate research assistants. And don't ****ing try convincing them otherwise!

Rachel Zegler, from all the controversy has backed away from acting, and turned to astrophysics.
Already a success.
