AI Thread Summary
To convert ethyl alcohol to vinyl acetate, the initial steps involve adding concentrated H2SO4 to ethyl alcohol to form ethene, followed by bromination to create 1,2-dibromoethane. The next step involves using NaNH2 to generate ethyne. Ethyne can potentially be converted to vinyl alcohol using H2SO4, water, and Hg2+ salts, but this typically yields acetaldehyde instead. The discussion suggests that obtaining the vinyl ester directly from acetaldehyde may be challenging, and an alternative approach might be to first synthesize the required ester before introducing a double bond. Further clarification and methods are sought by participants in the thread.

Homework Statement

Convert ethyl alcohol to vinyl acetate ( in not more than 6 steps)..

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

this is wat i tried:
first added conc. H2SO4 at 120 degrees , ethene is formed , then added Br2 in CCl4 , 1 2 dibromoethane is obtained ...then added NaNH2 and ethyne is formed...

what to do next??any idea??

Ethyne can be converted to vinyl alcohol if treated with H2SO4, H2O and Hg2+ salt (This is a general reaction that allows to obtain aldehydes/ketones from alkynes (agrees with Markovnikov's rule)). But in reality acetaldehyde would be obtained instead from ethyne and almost none of it will isomerase to vinyl alcohol. So I strongly douubt if you can obtain a vinyl ester from the acetadehyde. It is probably better to first obtain something like the required ester and then get the double bond somehow.

hmmm
but i m still confused...not gettin the rite method

I don't get how to argue it. i can prove: evolution is the ability to adapt, whether it's progression or regression from some point of view, so if evolution is not constant then animal generations couldn`t stay alive for a big amount of time because when climate is changing this generations die. but they dont. so evolution is constant. but its not an argument, right? how to fing arguments when i only prove it.. analytically, i guess it called that (this is indirectly related to biology, im...
