What HP of DC Motor is required to run a 2.5 KW DC Shunt Generator?

You're familiar with conversion of horsepower to kilowatts?
 
You may need to consider the losses in the motor (its efficiency) while calculating the required motor rating for your generator.
 
I am curious to know where this is going. What powers the motor and what is the generator powering?
