AI Thread Summary
For an electromagnet science fair project, key factors affecting strength include the number of coils and wire thickness. Participants suggest researching electromagnetism to understand these variables better, rather than simply requesting a materials list. Resources like the Physics Classroom and Wikipedia on electromagnets are recommended for foundational knowledge. The formula for magnetic field strength, B = μ₀(N/l)I, is also provided for further insight. Engaging with these resources will help in formulating a comprehensive approach to the project.

Homework Statement

I am doing an electromagnet project. I am a bit lazy and was asking if you guys could give me a list of ALL the materials I need to compete in the science fair. I'm in 10th grade, and my question is which factor affects strength of electromagnet the most. Things like # of coils or thickness of wire.

I would be extremely happy if you guys would help.

Homework Equations

none

The Attempt at a Solution

I am having major stress in my life, and I just need someone to give me a list so I can go to the store and buy those materials.

Do your research, we don't give out answers here. Look up some articles on electromagnetism to look at what determines magnetic field strength and so forth.

http://www.physicsclassroom.com/ might be a good place to start.

Edit: shouldn't be too hard, the formula is B = \mu_0(\frac{N}{l})I Look for the definition of magnetic field strength, if that's what your being asked to interpret.

As has been said, we don't do your work for you. But I can point you to an introductory article that should get you started:

Starting with the mass considerations #m(t)# is mass of water #M_{c}# mass of container and #M(t)# mass of total system $$M(t) = M_{C} + m(t)$$ $$\Rightarrow \frac{dM(t)}{dt} = \frac{dm(t)}{dt}$$ $$P_i = Mv + u \, dm$$ $$P_f = (M + dm)(v + dv)$$ $$\Delta P = M \, dv + (v - u) \, dm$$ $$F = \frac{dP}{dt} = M \frac{dv}{dt} + (v - u) \frac{dm}{dt}$$ $$F = u \frac{dm}{dt} = \rho A u^2$$ from conservation of momentum , the cannon recoils with the same force which it applies. $$\quad \frac{dm}{dt}...
