AI Thread Summary
A discussion highlights a study from an English university indicating that the order of letters in a word is not crucial for readability, as long as the first and last letters are correctly positioned. Participants express surprise at this finding, noting their ability to read jumbled text without difficulty. The conversation shifts to a light-hearted exchange about weather experiences, particularly regarding the impact of Hurricane Isabel in North Carolina, where one participant shares their experience with strong winds and power outages. The overall tone remains casual and engaging, with a mix of humor and personal anecdotes.

heh, and while I'm reading this, not having much trouble I might add, I'm thinking "What in the heck is going on with this person, did you get smacked in the head."

And then I realized what was up, that is pretty cool, thanks for the info.

Hey Megashawn, if Tsunami doesn't mind the brief interruption, how fare thee the weather of late? Weren't you pretty close to all of the action? If you have a lot to tell, why don't you start a thread.

By the way, I agree. Cool Tsunami!
I have seen some posts that make this look good.

WAY more than once! Haven't we all?

Well, I live in the center of NC, so I only caught the outer edge of Isabel. We were getting around 50 mph winds, lost power at work for about 2 hours, which is cool for me. I've heard the coast managed pretty good aside from the flooding. A bunch of trees that were weakened in our last ice storm fell down, branches and leaves everywhere. Not quite as bad as when Hugo came through town.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
