Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the possibility of enrolling directly in PhD programs after completing undergraduate studies, specifically in the context of opportunities available in the USA for students from India. The conversation touches on admission requirements such as the GRE and the structure of PhD programs in the US.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the possibility of joining PhD programs directly after undergraduate studies in the USA, referencing their experience in India.
  • Another participant notes that most PhD programs in the US are effectively direct PhD programs, often labeled as combined MS/PhD programs, typically lasting about five years.
  • A follow-up question seeks clarification on whether the GRE is necessary for admission into these programs.
  • A participant suggests consulting a specific essay in a forum sticky thread for more detailed information on pursuing a career in physics.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants appear to agree on the existence of direct PhD programs in the US, but there is uncertainty regarding the specific admission requirements, such as the necessity of the GRE.

Contextual Notes

There is a lack of detailed information on the specific requirements for direct PhD enrollment, and the discussion does not clarify the variations in program structures or GRE requirements across different institutions.

Who May Find This Useful

Undergraduate students considering graduate studies in physics, particularly those interested in direct PhD opportunities in the USA.

Hello there, I'm a Undergraduate student of Physics from India. Recently I came across information regarding joining PhD programmes directly after completing undergraduate courses in Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Frankly speaking, I didn't know it was possible. Now, since I solemnly want to continue my post undergraduate studies in USA, are there any similar opportunities there? As far as I know, I need to go through GRE to get admitted to US universities at graduate level, does that test also make me eligible to get enrolled into a direct PhD programme, if there any?

Most phd programs in the states are basically direct phd programs (though some of them officially call themselves combined ms/phd programs). The programs are usually about 5 years.

Pardon my ignorance, I didn't know about that. So, I need to go through GRE for getting admitted, right?

I will be very tacky here and ask you to read Part V and Part VII of my "So You Want To Be A Physicist" essay in one of the Sticky Thread in this forum.
