AI Thread Summary
Undergraduate students in Physics from India can pursue direct PhD programs in the USA, often referred to as combined MS/PhD programs, which typically last around five years. Admission to these programs generally requires taking the GRE, which is a standard requirement for graduate-level studies in the US. The discussion highlights the importance of understanding the structure of US PhD programs and the necessity of standardized testing for eligibility.

Hello there, I'm a Undergraduate student of Physics from India. Recently I came across information regarding joining PhD programmes directly after completing undergraduate courses in Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Frankly speaking, I didn't know it was possible. Now, since I solemnly want to continue my post undergraduate studies in USA, are there any similar opportunities there? As far as I know, I need to go through GRE to get admitted to US universities at graduate level, does that test also make me eligible to get enrolled into a direct PhD programme, if there any?

Most phd programs in the states are basically direct phd programs (though some of them officially call themselves combined ms/phd programs). The programs are usually about 5 years.

Pardon my ignorance, I didn't know about that. So, I need to go through GRE for getting admitted, right?

I will be very tacky here and ask you to read Part V and Part VII of my "So You Want To Be A Physicist" essay in one of the Sticky Thread in this forum.

Currently I have finished addition ,substraction of 2 digit numbers and divisions, multiplication of 1 digit numbers. I am moving pretty slowly. Can someone tell me what topics to cover first to build a framework and then go on in detail. I want to learn fast. It has taken me a year now learning arithmetic. I want to speed up. Thanks for the help in advance. (I also...
Hi community My aim is to get into research about atoms, specifically, I want to do experimental research that explores questions like: 1. Why do Gallium/Mercury have low melting points 2. Why are there so many exceptions and inconsistencies when it comes to explaining molecular structures / reaction mechanisms in inorganic and organic chemistry 3. Experimental research about fundamental Quantum Mechanics, such as the one being followed by Hiroshima university that proved that observing...
