Does consciousness cause thoughts?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the relationship between consciousness and thoughts, particularly in the context of free will. It argues that effects cannot precede their causes, suggesting that consciousness cannot cause thoughts since one cannot be aware of a thought before it occurs. The point is made that thoughts can arise during subconscious states, reinforcing the idea that consciousness does not directly generate thoughts. Additionally, the distinction between being conscious of something and the definition of consciousness itself is highlighted, indicating that these concepts may not align neatly. The conversation acknowledges the complexity and potential triviality of such philosophical questions.

Does consciousness cause thoughts?
This question is central to the debate concerning free will.
1. Effect ( by definition) cannot precede cause.
2. It is impossible to be conscious of a thought before you think it.
3. Therefore, it is impossible for consciousness to cause thoughts.

you can think when you are subconscious, so I say no.

But at the same time, questions like this are so flaky and for me the answer usually turns out to be trivial.

Plus, being conscious of something is different from the definition of consciousness isn't it?

Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
