Programs Double Major or Single: Which is the Best Choice for Physics Students?

AI Thread Summary
Taking a double major in Physics and Electrical Engineering (EE) offers practical knowledge and increased employment opportunities, which can be beneficial for future career decisions. However, pursuing a double major may extend the time to graduate, potentially taking five years instead of the traditional four, and could be counterproductive if there is a lack of interest in EE. A single major in Physics allows for deeper focus and mastery of the subject, which may be more advantageous for graduate school applications. Consulting with an academic advisor is essential to understand the feasibility and requirements of a double major in Physics and EE.

What are the pros and cons of taking a double major vs a single? Would I be miss information that I might gain by just focusing on one major? The degree options in question are: Physics, or Physics w/Electrical Engineering. My main priority would probably by physics.

You should probably check with an advisor at your school to make sure that a physics/EE double major is possible and what you would have to do to fulfill all the requirements.

well of course if you double with EE, then you'll gain more practical knowledge, have more employment opportunites and probably be able to better to decide what to do in the future. But having 2 degrees will not improve your chances of getting into a good grad school, will probably take 5 instead of 4 or 3 years to graduate, and will be a waste of time if you dislike EE

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
